Expect the Mutiny

What an appropriate theme and perfect timing for my feelings towards Genius Hour right now! This image depicts my sentiments exactly for Genius Hour project. To be honest I am so busy in my daily activities, I do not want to sit down and spend time on my Genius Hour project. I just want to relax and wind down. Hmm...maybe I should have done my GH project on relaxing - perhaps meditating? Ooh, that would have been perfect! Not to mention, French braiding has not been going so well for me. :(

The message for this week's blog is, "when you seek your passion, there’ll be parts of you that go into rebellion. This week is all about exploring how you push past the frustration factor." Wow, this is spot on for me! I have not been spending the '20 minutes' a day French braiding because as I mentioned earlier, that is the last thing I want to spend time on. Then, when I do binge my GH project on a weekend, I get frustrated because I have not been succeeding too well. I have watched several videos and practiced, but I get confused. During our Elevator Pitch discussions last week I mentioned to my classmate that perhaps I would do better with a hands-on lesson. The videos seem quite easy, but then when I transfer the skill it is not the same.

I found the quote to the right and it really resonated with me for a couple reasons. First of all, I thought of my students. Some kids think they are the status quo and do not think they can accomplish greater or more challenging things. Secondly, the quote also applied to me. I have ordinary talent when it comes to braiding, but I need to have extraordinary perseverance to accomplish French braiding.

In the picture to the left you will see the nine steps that seem to be the consistent ones for basic French braiding. I think my fingers and my mind are not seeing and doing the same thing. So, with that said, I may now try to use the color coded steps (bottom picture) as this may assist with when I am adding a new section. Or, I may enlist the help of my neighbor's daughter who taught herself how to French braid. She is actually quite good and can now even French braid her own hair and has moved on to some other cool French braiding styles.

Stay tuned!

  1. I feel you on the french braiding. I can do it, but it falls apart. Plus, I only have one braid I can do and it NEVER looks good. However, I feel like I have this lacking skill is in other "girlie" areas as well--I'm crappy at make up, fashion, hairstyles, etc... It just so much to learn !!! Maybe my next genius project will be "basic woman stuff".
